You may have heard the story of Eric Drew. His story has been on Dateline, CNN, Montel Williams, and even Geraldo Rivera (living the dream!).

Eric was diagnosed with leukemia in 2001 and went in for treatment. While in the hospital, a lab tech stole his credit cards and went to town (nice!).

Here was the guy laying in the hospital and getting hit with collection letters and new credit cards. Even after the lap technician was convicted, it still took him 2 years to get his credit cleaned up.

He sued the credit reporting agencies and banks and the first settlement was done this week with TransUnion.

Aside from the money he received, which I assume is decent, TransUnion will now allow people in hospitals to file an ID theft claim with a doctor’s note and made other concessions.

Not surprising, TransUnion isn’t admitting that they did anything wrong, but rather said they are taking “even greater steps to assist impaired individuals who have become victims of identity theft.”

Now that TransUnion has settled, I expect BoA, Chase, Citibank, Equifax, and Experian to follow suit.
